The Johnson collection
This art collection is named after John Johnson (1861 - 1951), a wealthy businessman and art collector.
John Johnson was born and raised in Bohuslän. He became a successful wine merchant in Gothenburg and Stockholm. His fortune gave him the means to create one of Sweden's finest private collections of European art.
John Johnson left the collection to the city of Uddevalla, that chose to place it in Uddevalla museum in 1953. Since 1977, Bohusläns museum displays and cares for the collection as assigned by the Municipality of Uddevalla. The collection encompasses 67 works.
John Johnson was particularly fond of 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting, and the so-called Düsseldorf school of painting from the 19th century. The collection also contains several works by younger Swedish artists such as Carl Fredrik Hill, Ernst Josephsson, Anders Zorn and Bruno Liljefors.
Welcome to a real treasure of art!
